— Japan June Current Account MNI Fcast: Y419.8 Bln Surplus, -22.1%
TOKYO (MNI) – Japan’s current account surplus continued to shrink
in June on slower exports and a wider service deficit, data from the
Ministry of Finance showed on Wednesday.
The current account surplus stood at Y433.3 billion in June, down
19.6% from a year earlier. It was above the median forecast in a MNI
survey for a surplus of Y419.8 billion, or a 22.1% fall.
Japan’s current account balance has been in surplus except for a
rare deficit in January this year due to slower shipments to China
during Lunar New Year holidays.
The income surplus, the largest component of the current account,
fell 4.1% on the year to Y580.2 billion in June, marking a second
straight fall.
Exports declined 1.5% in June from a year earlier, marking the
first fall in four months, following a 11.3% increase in the previous
month.
Imports dipped 1.2% in June for the first fall in 30 months,
following a 11.1% rise in the previous month.
The services account — including transport, travel and financial
services — posted a deficit of Y193.5 billion in June, compared with a
shortfall of Y104.6 billion a year earlier.
The combined goods and services accounts were in deficit by Y81.5
billion in June, reversing a surplus of Y25.3 billion a year before.
