US major indices claw back some of the declines

  • Nasdaq leads the way with a gain of 2.21%
Stocks close little changed

The major US stock indices clawed back some of the declines from Friday's tumble.

  • Dow industrial average rose 587.98 points or 1.29% at 46067.58.
  • S&P index rose 102.21 points or 1.56% at 6654.72.
  • NASDAQ index rose 490.18 points or 2.21% at 22694.61.

The small-cap Russell 2000 earlier rose 66.18 point or 2.79% at 2461.41.

The gains could be attributed to more conciliatory comments over the weekend from Pres. Trump in regard to China (a day after saying that tariffs would be increased to 100%). The hostage release and hope for peace in the Middle East also helped. However, they did not erase the sharp declines from last Friday.

Tomorrow will be a key bias-defining moment in the short term for the major indices. What storyline will win out and control the bias?
