NASDAQ and S&P close at new records. Indices recover from declines in up and down session

Stocks close at new record highs

The broader stock indices closed at new record levels in what was an up-and-down trading session.

  • S&P index closed up 20.82 points or 0.32% at 6466.58.
  • NASDAQ index rose 31.24 points or 0.14% at 21713.14.
  • Dow industrial average rose 463.66 points or 1.04% at 44922.27.

The small-cap Russell 2000 gained 45.27 points or 1.98% at 2328.05. Yesterday the index rose 2.99%

The NASDAQ index traded as high as 121.84 points at session highs but then moved into negative territory by -36.76 points before rallying into the close.

The S&P index was up 34.52 points at session highs then dipped briefly into negative territory by -0.74 points before closing higher.

Each of the broader indices made new intraday record levels. For the S&P, the new record high is at 6480.28. For the NASDAQ index, the new record level is at 21,801.75
