The US has a shutdown on October 1.
The GOP points to the Dems for not agreeing to a clean Continuing Resolution.
The Dems would argue that Key Democratic demands — especially extending the enhanced subsidies under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace credits and reversing planned cuts to social programs — were excluded from the GOP bill. That made supporting the CR politically and substantively unacceptable for Democrats.
The GOP argue that those things are negotiated after the CR.
The Pres. goes overseas, he talks of the East Wing rebuild, and shuts down SNAP payment among other things. He stays on the outside.
Air traffic controller start not to show up for work because well they are not collecting a pay check. They call in sick. Air traffic is more risky. Flights are canceled and will only get worse if it continues.
Now Pres. Trump says to air traffic controllers to show up or you will be docked pay (which he probably can't do) which they are not getting now, but will get later when government re-opens. He also says that he will recommend a $10,000 per person bonus for distinguished service to the country.
So..
- government shutdown,
- no pay,
- work slowdown,
- you must come to work or else you will be docked, but
- if you do you get $10,000 bonus.
There will then be a compromise and government will be open (simply because Thanksgiving is coming up). Back pay will then be paid in full, AND there will be bonuses paid (what about TSA workers or other government workers? Will they get a bonus) all because the solution/ compromise could not be hammered out 4-weeks ago. I guess it is a solution to a problem, but it certainly seems like an inefficient way to run a business (like the government).
I guess some of that tariff money will be earmarked for the chaos caused by politics, along with farm subsidies for the tariffs and the $2000 per head because of the tariffs.
