The early comments ahead of the Trump-Carney meeting were positive but it's not clear if the pair will speak again after meeting at the White House. There are no plans for a big trade deal but Trump hinted at some positive news earlier when he said Canada will be "very happy" after Carney's visit.
That hint hearkens back to the days of post-Liberation Day when Trump left bread crumbs before walking back tariffs.
What could it be? Trump said Canada is doing a "much better job" on fentanyl. Trump is facing a Supreme Court case regarding those tariffs, which US companies argue violate the Constitution. Walking away now could spare him a tough verdict.
Canada has said to be looking for relief on steel tariffs so something could be announced on that front as well.
"I love Canada and the people of Canada," Trump said in comments before the meeting, before touching on autos and steel. "I think we've come a long way over the past few months."
I will be watching out for any comments together but even if that doesn't happen, expect the individual leaders to speak (or in Trump's case, to tweet).
