A potential U.S. government shutdown stems from Congress’s failure to agree on funding beyond September. Republicans hold both chambers but lack the 60 Senate votes needed to push through a spending bill on their own.
Democrats are using this leverage to block the Republican proposal, arguing it undermines healthcare affordability. They want an extension of tax credits that lower insurance costs, a reversal of Trump-era Medicaid cuts, and oppose planned reductions to the CDC and NIH budgets.
While the House has already passed a stopgap funding measure, the bill remains stalled in the Senate, keeping the risk of a shutdown alive.
Funding for the US government will be cut off at the end of Tuesday if the Senate does not pass the bill.
