No deal today but he said they hope to make quick progress.
"We got into details in a way that hadn't happened before," US-Canada trade minister Dominic LeBlanc said. "We talked about reaching a deal quickly on aluminum, steel and energy."
Discussions will continue today and tomorrow and we hope to get a deal as quickly as possible on those sectors.
- I saw some substantial progress today and I am happy
- We have some momentum now that we did not have when we woke up this morning
- At the same time, we have not completed that work and it's continuing
- Teams on both sides said they would continue their work to conclude as quickly as possible
- We identified some areas where we could cooperate more
- The conversation between the two leaders left us with the impression that we will try to structure something in these sectors
- Asked about a timeline, said he's more optimistic without offering details
- He said they were 'recognizing the urgency' for a deal
- We won't be talking about the details of our conversations
- LeBlanc says he will be remaining in Washington
- "I'm not pessimistic at all"
- We talked about deepening the energy partnership
- We talked about a whole series of security measures
It's not clear what kind of timeline he's working on here but with LeBlanc staying in Washington, it's 'days' not 'weeks'. If we don't hear anything by Monday, I'd take that as a bad sign.
