The White House isn't required to publish the report
Today is the deadline for the Dept of Commerce to submit a report to the White House about using auto tariffs on national security grounds.
Axios reports that the plan is to keep the contents of the report a secret for now.
Sources familiar with the White House's auto tariffs strategy tell me they plan to keep the contents of the Commerce report a secret, at least for the time being, as is their prerogative under the law.
The same report says most of Trump's advisors have been telling him tariffs would be a bad idea but he believes that keeping them in his pocket is a source of leverage in talks with the EU.
The bottom line here is that this deadline amounts to nothing because the White House can keep the report a secret.
