US DATA: Challenger reports 38,519 planned layoffs in Jan, up from
the 32,004 reported in December, but the lowest for a Jan since the data
series began in 1993. The job cuts in Jan were led by the
gov’t/non-profit sector reporting 6,450 layoff intentions followed by
retail with 5,755. However, retail did lead hiring announcements with
10,925 — a substantial improvement from the 600 announced in Jan ’09.
