US DATA: Challenger reports 37,986 planned layoffs in Oct, up slightly
from 37,151 in Sept, but down sharply from 55,679 in Oct 2009. Oct
layoffs led by the entertainment/leisure sector and the government
sector. Challenger said job cuts are the lowest in a decade due to a
slowly improving economy, but also due to the fact that payrolls have
already been trimmed to a minimum. Hiring plans for retail were at
66,000 in October after the 114,000 plans reported in September, both
well above their year-ago levels. See MNI main wire.
