Turkey's Ertem maintains that central bank independence is fundamental

Turkish presidential adviser Cemil Ertem speaks to Reuters

  • Central bank acts in line with needs, realities
  • Focus will be on economic targets and reforms now that elections are out of the way

The lira has been sent for a see-saw ride today, first gaining about 3% against the dollar before paring all of that as we head into US trading.

The gains were on the back of post-elections euphoria that there will be no regime change and political stability. But Erdogan's known views of interference on the central bank's policies have made for the relief to be short-lived with the focus back on an overheating economy and the possibility of Erdogan not allowing the central bank to tighten further.
