Trump told his options are limited
Trump opened a can of worms by saying he might intervene in the Huawei CFO case if it helps get a trade deal.
For one, that diminishes the chance of an extradition and conviction. A judge or jury may interpret political reasons for the arrest and free her.
Secondly, the executive and judicial branches operate at arms length.
Trump's advisors told him to drop it, according to the WSJ.
"The arrest was a Justice Department matter, they said, and the White House should stay out of it for now, this person said. There are no immediate plans to intervene in the matter, officials added," the report says.
However Trump could have some powers, especially if it's deemed a national security issue and Obama pushed the Justice Dept to drop cases against several Iran sanctions violators while he was negotiating a nuclear deal.
