Spain could possibly throw a wrench into May's Brexit plan

The Spanish govt is reportedly unhappy about May's withdrawal agreement

A Reuters reporter is saying that Spain's foreign minister, Josep Borrell, wants the Brexit text to be clear that what's being negotiated on trade between the European Union and the UK does not apply to Gibraltar.

Borrell is cited as saying that until that is clear, they won't be able to agree to the withdrawal agreement. That's setting up for a tricky situation ahead of this weekend's Brexit summit in Brussels.

If any of the EU27 members fail to agree on the text, it'll drag things out further and we're not likely to see a Brexit deal come about by the end of the year. That leaves very, very little time and a slim chance of things working out before the March deadline next year.

Last month, it was reported that UK and Spain have come to an agreement on this. But if the latest withdrawal agreement undermines that, then this is another potential headache alongside the Irish border/backstop. And that's certainly not good news for the pound.
