SMBC says BOJ may need to alter its policy if Trump complains about the yen

According to Hidenori Suezawa, the chief fixed-income strategist at SMBC Nikko Securities

Suezawa says that if the US accuses the BOJ of guiding the yen lower, then there's a risk that the central bank may need to alter its powerful easing monetary policy.

He notes that Trump has been announcing a string of protectionist policies ahead of the mid-term elections at the end of this year, and Japan may be next on the list.

Suezawa also says that the BOJ will find it difficult to continue current policy if it were to be accused of guiding the yen lower in a time when the Fed is raising rates (and the BOJ is still keeping interest rates low).

Well, the yen may not be the only thing that Trump may take a swipe at when it comes to Japan. Kuroda's going to have nightmares if things were to head down this path.
