Arizona Senator dies at the age of 81
John McCain, the six term Senator from Arizona (30 years in total), has died at the age of 81 at his home in Sedona, Arizona. McCain was diagnosed with a deadly form of brain cancer back in July 2017. His family announced he would stop all medical treatment on Friday.
McCain, a US Navy war hero, and was a prisoner of war for 5 years during the Vietnam conflict.
He served two terms in the House of Representatives starting in 1982, before ascending to the Senate in 1987. His political career included two failed attempts at the Presidency. In 2000 he lost in the primaries to then Texas Governor George W. Buss and in 2008 he lost as the Republican nominee to then Sen. Barack Obama.
He was Arizona's senior Senator since 1995 and last served as the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
McCain is survived by his wife Cindy and seven children.
