Schaeuble: Germany 2014 Balanced Budget Not A Commitment

FRANKFURT (MNI) – The German government’s aim of reaching a
structurally balanced budget by 2014 is not a full-fledged commitment
but rather a target, German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told the
daily newspaper Die Welt on Thursday.

“In the coalition [government], we have always remained cautious. I
do not promise more than I can keep,” Schaeuble said. “It is good that
the coalition has set an ambitious target.”

To reach the target, the government will have to generate
substantial savings, Schaueble said, adding that “this will certainly
not be a walk in the park.”
