And just before I step away to enjoy the rest of the weekend let’s pay respect to the passing of a hugely gifted musician and song writer, JJ Cale, who died from a heart attack on Friday aged 74
Songs such as Cocaine and After Midnight, both made famous by Eric Clapton, are amongst his finest works in a career largely spent away from the limelight but one that brought us The Tulsa Sound, bringing with it the innovative use of drum machines. Call me the Breeze became a huge part of the Lynyrd Skynrd catalogue.
Neil Young said this last year:
Of all the players I ever heard, it’s gotta be Hendrix and JJ Cale who are the best electric guitar players
Eric Clapton in Vanity Fair recently:
Q: Which living person do you most admire?
A: JJ Cale.Rare praise indeed
Troubadour, released in 1976, remains my favourite album of his but if you don’t know much of this wonderful man’s work do yourself a favour and check him out.
RIP Jon Weldon Cale
