China's Vice Premier and lead trade negotiator Liu He met with Trump at the White House
The news was disappointing but shouldn't have come as much of a surprise I guess. Trump is nowhere. The earlier posts (read from the bottom for chronology):
- Trump back on China now - trade talks may go on another 6 weeks
- Trump comments on Mexico now - he might tariff cars at 25%
- US trade rep Lighthizer says still some major, major issues left in trade talks
- Trump says getting close to trade deal with China, not there yet
Recapping, and adding in a little more. In brief though it was the usual bluster from Trump. Back in December we got the drivel that there would be a trade deal in 90 days, which was always rubbish, and now it stretching further and further out. Anyway …:
- No deal agreed
- may be announced in about a month to six weeks
- On a potential summit with China's President Xi Jinping … "If we have a deal, then we'll have a summit"
- intellectual property protection, certain tariffs, enforcement are all unresolved issues
- "We've agreed to far more than we have left to agree to … "This is the granddaddy of them all."
Also … for a more clear headed idea of where its at:
- US Trade Rep Lighthizer said there were still major issues to resolve
- White House trade adviser Peter Navarro said "the last mile of the marathon is actually the longest and the hardest"
