At least from the US perspective
On the agenda for the NATO meeting in Brussels on July will be:
- deterrence of Russia's malign activities
- strength, unity of the alliance
- emphasize burden sharing by NATO allies
- there are no discussions about altering US force of 30,000 troops in Germany
The NATO meeting will be followed by a Trump/Putin summit. According to the White House:
- Determine whether Russia is willing to reduce tensions in a relationship with US
- Trump will hold one-on-one meeting with Putin, followed by meeting with advisers from both sides
- Trump, Putin likely to discuss arms control, strategic stability, including Russian INF treaty violations
- may discuss extending New Start arms control treaty by 5 years
New Start, which stands for Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, is an arms control deal. The treaty is an attempt to limit the size of the American and Russian nuclear arsenal. As such, it allows Washington and Moscow to keep tabs on one another's nuclear programs through stringent inspections and data sharing.
The treaty is currently in effect until 2021, but there's an option for the leaders of both countries to extend the accord up to five years.
