New Zealand data
Net migration in March is +5480, from February 4930
- (permanent and long-term visitors)
Short-term visitors +13% y/y in March
Past months have shown renewed impetus for migration to NZ. The new government was elected partially on a platform to reduce migration into the country, but the latest data shows resilience for inflows.
And, on the short-term visitors (mainly tourism) ... yowza. From Stats NZ:
A new high count of 3.82 million visitors arrived in New Zealand in the March 2018 year
an increase of 276,200 (8 percent) from the March 2017 year
March 2018 broke the record for the number of overseas visitors for a March month. Top source of visitor arrivals in March 2018 was Australia, at 37 percent of all visitor arrivals
next top sources of visitor arrivals in March were:
- China - 11 percent of visitor arrivals
- United States - 11 percent of visitor arrivals
United Kingdom - 7 percent of visitor arrivals
Tourism is a big industry in NZ
ps. Not generally too much of an immediate FX impact from this data point.
