Tokyo's main index closes nearly flat on the day

A steady day for Japanese stocks for the most part despite the declines seen in Chinese equities. The Hang Seng is trading higher by 0.6% after HSBC reported strong profits although the bank's stocks has pared some of its earlier gains following the announcement two hours ago.
