Tokyo's main index closes lower on the day as Asian shares slump

A softer touch but Japanese equities were rather resilient on the day. It opened at the lows and closed the day near the highs. Likewise for the Hang Seng index. The recovery from the lows is a welcome boost for USD/JPY at the very least, but how long that will last will depend on how US and European equities perform later today.
