Voting is Tuesday
Theresa May made a gambit in today's meeting of Conservative lawmakers after she backed an amendment that would replace the Irish border backstop with 'alternative arrangements'.
May believes she needs a vote in parliament to bring to the EU to break the deadlock on the issue and the deadlock on Brexit.
Her immediate problem is that the hard-Brexit ERG already says it won't back the amendment. That could doom it in tomorrow's vote.
The x-factor right now is Labour. Corbyn hasn't said what he will support but is rumored to be leaning towards backing the Cooper-Boles amendment, which would block a hard Brexit.
No matter which permutation succeeds, or if they all fail, that still doesn't bring us any closer to clarity. Sending May back to Brussels guarantees nothing while blocking a hard Brexit could fracture her own party.
The next major headline to watch out for is a leak -- likely early in the day ahead -- about which amendment Corbyn will put his weight behind.
Meanwhile the 1-hour chart of GBP/USD is consolidating around 1.3160 with all sides frozon on the lack of clarity:
