Latest IPSOS Mori poll has Conservatives widening lead to 8 points

The latest and last poll to be published before voting closes 8 June

  • Cons 44%
  • Labour 36%
  • Lib Dems 7%
  • UKIP 4%
  • Greens 2%

The London Evening Standard commissioned the poll. Yes the same Evening Standard that now had George Osborne as its Editor.

Their previous poll on 2 June had the Tories with a 5 point lead and these latest figures point to a Conservative majority of around 40, which would be just enough for Mrs May to claim a mandate for Brexit negotiations but short of the three-figure landslide that senior Tories hoped for when she called the snap election three years ahead of schedule.

GBP a tad firmer on the news but it was short lived. We know that polls mean nothing given the wide deviation in readings so far.Bring on the facts!

Gideon Skinner, head of political research at Ipsos MORI, said:

"The Conservatives had a wobble last week, but have regained a clear lead in the last few days. Theresa May's advantage over Jeremy Corbyn is also lower than it was at the start of the campaign, but she and her party have kept their support among key voting groups such as older people.

"Having said that, one in five voters say they might still change their mind, so there are still votes to fight for."

One in 5 voters might yet change their mind. That's one helluva swing and will probably only add to the muddled outcome.
