Japan politics - heads up for Tokyo election this weekend

It's the Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly election this weekend

  • Sunday July 2
  • It's a 127-seat assembly

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike's new political party (Tomin First no Kai) is leading the race

  • She was previously the Minister of Defense in Abe's government back in 2007 (not for very long)
  • Koike was elected Governor of Tokyo on 31 July 2016
  • She has resigned from the LDP
  • Koike's party has formed an alliance with Komeito Party ... which is Pm Abe's coalition partner in the national government!

The election is being seen as crucial one for Abe, he will cop the blame if the LDP lose.

Something to watch come Monday.
