Japan Oct Construction Orders -5.6% Y/Y, 5th Straight Fall

TOKYO (MNI) – The value of construction orders received in October
by the 50 largest contractors in Japan fell 5.6% from a year earlier to
Y586.72 billion, the fifth consecutive y/y drop, the Ministry of Land,
Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism said on Tuesday.

The October decline followed -15.0% in September, -0.02% in August
and -0.7% in July. The record drop of -42.8% was marked in July 2009.

The breakdown for the latest month follows (on-year changes in the
previous month in parentheses):

— Domestic private sector: +8.9% y/y at Y413.11 billion (vs.
-20.5%), the first rise in two months.

— Public sector: -44.1% y/y at Y102.13 billion (vs. +2.3%), the
first y/y fall in two months.

— Overseas: +45.7% y/y at Y30.34 billion (vs. +42.8%), the second
consecutive y/y rise.
