Italy's Di Maio says 2019 deficit at 2.4% is confirmed

Comments by Italy's deputy prime minister Luigi Di Maio

  • Government is still mulling over cutting deficit after 2019
  • There is a wrong perception of Italy's government
  • Says that growth will allow room to create less deficit
  • Says that €10 billion is minimum amount for citizens' income
  • Budget details will go through parliament over the next few hours
  • No plans for automatic mechanism to cut deficit more if GDP growth disappoints

I think that last comment there pretty much says it all. They're surely going to go ahead with the 2.4% deficit with plans to soothe lawmakers and the EU with a "promise" of lowering the deficit in the coming years.

But if the economy isn't up to par, they aren't going to back down with their fiscal plans and that's a cause for concern in the long-term view.
