Italy's Conte says he is proud of "radical change" that his government will bring

Comments by new Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte

  • Government program will be based on coalition deal
  • Coalition partners have been accused of being populist and anti-system
  • But we are looking out for best interests of the country
  • Vision of government will be medium-to-long-term
  • First concern of government will be social rights
  • Citizens have right to minimum wage, universal income
  • Wants to reduce debt through GDP growth
  • Will end the "business of immigration"
  • Immigration has been fed through "fake solidarity"

Conte and his government is set to face a confidence vote later at 1700 GMT, and is expected to pull through with a thin majority in the Senate vote.

So far not really very soothing comments by Conte, as it looks like they're still very likely to go head on against the EU and challenge its fiscal policies.

BTPs are at the lows for the day now, with 2-year yields rising to 0.95% now.
