Mattarella and Cottarelli met today
A series of meetings have led to an apparent decision to restart talks to form a political government, with plans for Cottarelli to lead a caretaker government evidently put on hold.
Di Maio met with the president today, perhaps seeking a way to get Savona approved as finance minister or trying to find a way to get the League to agree to someone else. For his part, the League leader struck a defiant tone and may prefer new elections to compromise.
On net, the market may have decided that Savona is better than new elections. But if the League and 5-Star can agree on someone else, that would be even better. Still, don't expect a massive reversal in Italy -- a populist government is still a very-uncertain future.
