The Italy budget saga was a dull, depressing story about bureaucrats fighting over a few ticks of a deficit target.
In the end, the EU won out but both sides came out looking worse and the entire EU budget system has developed into a further farce, with France now skirting the rules. In the years ahead, we'll see this battle as a needless fight that further fractured the area at a time when it badly needed to come together.
Italy will find a way to post a 2.4% deficit-to-GDP ratio anyway.
