Slightly better than expected on the print here but it doesn't mask the fact that this is the third month in a row that factory activity has contracted (below 50.0). The new orders sub-index rose from 46.6 in November to 47.8 in December but still remains in contraction territory for the fifth straight month. That doesn't bode well for a significant improvement in factory activity as we move towards Q1 2019.
