Is Weidmann out of the race to succeed Draghi next year?

Recent whispers are suggesting that is the case

Reports are saying that German chancellor Angela Merkel will not be pushing for Weidmann (Bundesbank president) for the post of ECB presidency next year. Weidmann has long been seen as the front runner for the post so if he's out of the race, then it sure makes things interesting as there is no clear favourite other than him at the moment.

The fascinating part in all of this is how early Merkel has decided to abandon this pursuit. But her aims are much larger of course. To her, losing this battle isn't as important as winning the war. Merkel is of course targeting to put a German at the helm of the European Commission, in which the spot will also open up in October 2019, to succeed Juncker.

It's something I made a mention to here back in April.

If true, then it is no wonder why Weidmann resorted back to his old ways in his comments today here then. Over the last few months, he has been more reserved in his choice of words but today was pretty much the Weidmann we have come to know.

There's a host of key positions up for grabs in the next year in Europe. So, it's time to start placing those bets, people!
