Greece tells Troika to jog on while EU’s Schulz warns on ending agreements

It was all smiles and handshakes between Tsipras and Schulz earlier but the gloves look to be coming off now they’ve parted company.

Reuters report that the Greek government will not accept the Troika remaining in the country, nor will they accept any more pension cuts or austerity. The comments come after a German government document, seen by Reuters, asks the new Greek government to go back on its commitments to roll back austerity and carry on with reforms.

A Greek official said that the conditions cannot be accepted as they are against the mandate of Greek people and a hurdle to Europe’s economic growth.

EU’s Martin Schulz has just popped up on Reuters, via Handelsblatt, saying that if Greece unilaterally ends it’s agreement then the other parties are no longer obliged to keep their commitments.

I fear this issue has more room to heat up and we’re slowly heading closer to collision in the game of chicken

Schulz adds;

  • In that case (of ending agreements) Athens will no longer receive funding and be able to finance itself
  • Greek government has no choice but to keep its obligations
