Germany January flash manufacturing PMI 49.9 vs 51.5 expected

Latest data released by Markit/BME - 24 January 2019

Germany manufacturing PMI
  • Prior 51.5
  • Services PMI 53.1 vs 52.1 expected
  • Prior 51.8
  • Composite PMI 52.1 vs 51.9 expected
  • Prior 51.6

Factory activity tumbles into contraction territory but that is offset as service firms carry the German economy on their back now. Either way, it's not exactly a positive sign as the slowdown in manufacturing/factory activity continues to drag on into the new year.

For some context, the manufacturing print here is a 50-month low and Markit also notes that it is not certain that the services sector would continue to provide growth impetus for the economy in the coming months.

Given that backdrop, it sure looks like the economic slowdown plaguing the Eurozone last year is slowly creeping into Q1 2019 already.
