Further details on the USMCA deal trickling in...

In case you missed it, NAFTA has been renamed to the USMCA

  • All three countries agree to maintain market-determined exchange rate
  • Not going to manipulate respective currencies
  • Canada can export 2.6 mil passenger vehicles to US tariff-free annually if US imposes national security tariffs on autos - side letter
  • All light trucks from Mexico excluded from any possible US autos tariffs - side letter

Some of the details above are provided in a side letter to the deal, which may take effect before the USMCA is enacted. And it also states that Canada and Mexico can challenge any improper allocation of quotas under the existing NAFTA dispute settlement procedures.

The tariffs part is a little significant in the sense that there is some exclusions/exemptions for Canada and Mexico should US go ahead with imposing autos tariffs on grounds of national security - which they are pursuing but in a slow process.
