The knives are out for Theresa May
The Daily Mail reports today that former Conservative cabinet member Andrew Mitchell told a party gathering that Theresa May needed to resign.
They cited a Conservative MP who was present. 'Mr Mitchell effectively said she was dead in the water. He said she was weak, had lost her authority, couldn't go on and we needed a new leader. Some of us were very surprised and disagreed with him.'
Mitchell is a close personal and political ally of David Davis, who is in charge of negotiating the Brexit deal. Earlier this week, there were reports that Davis had grown frustrated with May's unwillingness to guarantee the rights of EU nationals in the UK.
This report is part of a series of smears that are undermining May and sowing rumours about disarray in the party. Government officials denied all the reports and called the latest ones 'gossip stories'.
