Today was the end of the week,, the month and the quarter. The most action was centered in the GBPUSD, USDJPY and USDCAD. The EURUSD, USDCHF, AUDUSD and NZDUSD traded most of the day with little movement although, there is some dollar buying at the end of the NY session that is extending the ranges a bit for some currency pairs.
Economically, today, the US personal spending rose by 0.1% vs 0.2% estimate. Income was higher by an expected +0.4%. Later there was mixed news with Chicago PMI higher than expectations at 57.7 vs 56.9 while the University of Michigan sentiment final numbers were less than expectations at 96.9 vs 97.6 est. The data did not have a great impact on the currency rates.
There were some Fed speakers today with Feds Dudley, Kashkari and Bullard all speaking. Kaahkari is a voting dove. He did not vote for the last Fed hike. Bullard also has dovish tendencies. He is non voting this year but said he can see gradual hikes, but also added the economy is not making the noise of a booming one. Dudley (voting) said that a couple more hikes in 2017 seemed reasonable and that the neutral target rate is 2-3%. What was interesting is Kashkari and Bullard both talked about being in favor of winding down the Fed's balance sheet going forward.
How are the major pairs going out in trading today?
The GBPUSD moved up nicely - breaking away from the pairs 100 and 200 hour MAs at 1.2484 area in the process. The largest gains in the NY session got going in the last hour of trading in the London session. Was it some shorts covering into the weekend? Perhaps. Later in the day, the CBOT commitment of traders data showed that shorts in the GBP remained near record levels. Having a late day short squeeze higher after the market failed to stay below the 100 and 200 hour MAs makes more sense with the short backdrop of that pair. The price moved above the 1.2500 level and then the high from yesterday at 1.2523. That is bullish technical news going into the weekend. PS the EURGBP also stumbled lower and closesd at the lows in trading today, for the day, and even for the month. In the process it moved away from the 200 and 100 day MAs at 0.8548 and 0.85827. Staying below those two levels is more bearish.
The USDJPY also was a haven for dollar selling on the last day of the quarter. Today in this pair, a new week high was made at the 112.19 level. That was right near the 38.2% of the move down form the March high. From that peak, the price marched lower. By the close, the price nearly reached the converged 100 and 200 hour MAs at 111.15. Adding more importance to that price is that the 50% of the weeks trading range also comes in at that level. Next week, the fortunes of the bulls or bears will hinge on that area - at least at the start of the trading week.
while the GBPUSD and the USDJPY was taking a dollar lower path, the EURUSD went the opposite way. The EURUSD went lower in trading today (dollar higher) and completed a weak that saw the high on Monday and the low on Friday. Helping the push lower today was the weakness of the EURGBP AND the inability of the EURUSD to get above the 1.0700-1.0706 level. There are times when a level catches your attention as a level to pay attention to. Earlier in the session today, I wrote "ON the topside, the 1.0700-06 remains a key level to stay below. If that happens the shorts remain in control (despite the very narrow range). A move above and shorts looking for more EURUSD weakness grumble and that should lead to some shorts throwing in the towel (and buying)." The high price today stalled at 1.0701 and the last 4-5 hours of the trading day saw the price moving away from that key area. The 100 day MA is being approached at 1.0627 (the week is closing around 1.0650). That will be a technical level of importance going forward foe this pair.
The USDCAD today was impacted early by better than expected GDP (+0.6% vs +0.3% est). The USDCAD fell sharply but stalled at the 100 day MA at 1.3292. The price tested that MA level on 3 separate occasions, then took back the decline as shorts covered (high reached 1.3339. As soon as that retracement was done, the pair turned around and headed right back to the 100 day MA, where buyers again pushed the price higher into the close. If there is a devil currency, that one was it today. Stay away (or at least be patient and wait for extremes).
For the NZDUSD, the pair held the 100 hour MA today at the 0.70155 level and tumbled into the close. The price sits between the 100 bar MA on the 4-hour chart at 0.6997 and the the 100 hour MA at 0.70155. Follow those MAs in early trading on Sunday.
The AUDUSD also fell in the last hour of trading today, revisiting the low from earlier in the session at the 0.7622 level. On the move lower, the pair moved away from the 200 and 100 hour MAs which are both centered around the 0.7645 area. IF the USDCAD was a devil currency today, the AUDUSD was a close second it chopped up and down all day long.
That about does it apart from the summary snap shots below. Wishing you all a great and healthy weekend. Cheer someone up this weekend. It'll make you feel better in the process.
