Fonterra confirms E.Coli present – issues recall notice

Fonterra confirmed 9000 bottles of Anchor and Pams fresh cream have been contaminated with E.Coli.

The company released a statement last night saying it was conducting a voluntary recall of 300 millilitre and 500ml bottles of Anchor and Pams fresh cream with a best-before date of January 21, 2014, distributed in the North Island from Northland to Turangi, including Gisborne.

New Zealand managing director Peter McClure:

  • The company was yet to determine how the contamination happened
  • “very unlikely” to have come in with the milk from the farms
  • he said he did not want to speculate further on how the contamination happened
  • said E.Coli contaminations were “very rare” and this was the first time in at least 18 years that a Fonterra product had tested positive for the bacteria.

A Fonterra spokesman said the contamination had been traced to Fonterra’s processing facility at Takanini in Auckland

Thanks to Tom in the comments for the heads up on the story

It would seem that none of the product was for export, so, as long as the incident is seen to be contained, the minimal negative reaction from the NZD should continue. but, if it gets worse, its going to be negative input for the NZD.
