EU28 members still cannot agree on who should take up Europe's top jobs
It's a political mess in the European Council as members still cannot agree on who will be the European Commission's next president. Talks over the weekend came to a grinding halt after no conclusion once again with Germany's Angela Merkel pushing for Netherlands' Frans Timmermans to take over from Juncker.
However, her bid ran into opposition from centre-right leaders and national rivalry is so far preventing members from finding a consensus on the decision here.
French president, Emmanuel Macron, has said that the ECB presidency choice will only be made after all of this is settled. Considering Merkel's stance, it looks like she is very much pushing for Weidmann to take over from Draghi come October.
Anyway, the bloc's members are said to be reconvening again this morning with some sources suggesting that they've already begun discussions - started from 0530 GMT - in hope to break the political impasse we're seeing.
Word of advice, don't hold your breath waiting for it.
