Economic data due from Asia today

An Reserve Bank of New Zealand speaker kicks off the calendar here today

2100GMT - RBNZ Deputy Governor and Head of Financial Stability Grant Spencer will deliver a speech titled "Banking Regulation: Where to from here?"

As you can see from the title don't expect anything on the economic outlook or monetary policy. But we'll see.

2245GMT - New Zealand - Q2 jobs report. The labour market reports from NZ are quarterly not monthly so this will get attention. I posted previews here: NZ Q2 Employment report due Tuesday 2245GMT (Wed morning NZ time) - previews

2301GMT - UK data - BRC Shop Price Index

  • prior -0.3% y/y

2350GMT - Japan monetary base for July

0130GMT - Australia - Building Approvals for June - I'll be back with more on this on a separate post

0130GMT - Bank of Japan speaker - Yukitoshi Funo, Member of the Policy Board speaking at a meeting with business leaders in Sapporo. The last BOJ meeting (July 19 and 20) saw the final meeting for the two persistent dissenters on the BOJ policy board; the two incoming members are thought to be company men for Kuroda to join all the others. Don't expect Funo's speech to depart much for the regular BOJ line.

Something that is worth noting is the BOJ is flagging dropping the 80tln yen JGB buying target (back to around or under 50tln perhaps) - which may be heralded as 'tapering' by some but the target has become more or less irrelevant with the yield curve control policy - the Bank now buys what it needs to do to implement this its not bound by a number (80tln yen).
