ECB Weidmann: Germany Should Lower Budget Deficit Faster

FRANKFURT (MNI) – The German government should accelerate the
reduction of deficit, Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann told German
daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung on Thursday.

“Plans for a rising structural deficit this year and a balanced
budget in 2016 only are not particularly ambitious,” Weidmann said.

“Mistakes of the past must not be repeated,” he cautioned, noting
that policy makers had failed to utilize positive surprises in economic
performance to reduce a deficits more quickly.
