ECB Weidmann: Austerity, Reforms Are Best For Growth: Press

FRANKFURT (MNI) – Adding his views to the recent debate on a
European growth compact, Bundesbank President Jens Weidmann on Wednesday
warned against any diversion form the Eurozone’s fiscal consolidation
course.

Any weakening of the consolidation efforts would be
“counter-productive,” Weidmann told German weekly Die Zeit. “Especially
in times of uncertainty, it is key that politics remain credible and
stick to previously made commitments,” he said.

“Strict budget consolidation and determined structural reforms are
the best policies for growth as they will foster confidence and
strengthen the economic potential,” Weidmann said.
