China says that US tariffs are putting WTO 'under siege'

Comments by China's WTO ambassador Zhang Xiangchen during the WTO meeting in Geneva today

  • US is setting a very bad precedent by bluntly breaching its commitment made to the world
  • US had previously agreed not to apply such tariffs without WTO approval
  • WTO is 'under siege' and 'all of us should lock arms to defend it'

Comments that will probably fall on deaf ears with the Trump administration. Zhang also commented that WTO and its members needs to "put the beast back in the cage" with regards to the US tariffs.

Well, in Beijing it appears that they are trying to negotiate some form of understanding with the US as reported here. We'll have to see how the story develops later on in the day.

"Ain't no cage gonna hold me back, mate".
