Brexit - timeline to elect new PM is tight

The Financial Times on David Cameron's resignation and the fight for the top job

  • Nominations for the new leader should open on Wednesday evening
  • And close on Thursday lunchtime
  • The decision will be put to the Conservative party board on Tuesday for confirmation
  • MPs will whittle down the list of candidates to a shortlist of two before the Commons goes on its summer break, starting on July 22
  • The Conservative party's 150,000 members will then select Britain's new prime minister by September 2

Wow, that's quick!

  • Boris Johnson and Theresa May (home secretary) are the frontrunners
  • Stephen Crabb (work and pensions secretary) is in the mix
