More on this, from earlier: EU leaders say Brexit treaty can't change, Irish backstop should only be temporary
More now from the summit meeting, statement issued. Main points:
- EU says would use 'best endeavors' to negotiate expeditiously
- EU says it will seek trade deal by end-2020 to avoid backstop
- EU says backstop would apply temporarily, until better solution
- EU says if Brexit backstop triggered it would be temporary
- EU reiterates it doesn't seek use of Brexit backstop: statement
- EU said to strengthen wording on Brexit backstop in summit doc.
This all sounds vague. This is a hard issue, I have posted before that it is intractable (given the current division of Ireland).
