The Brady amendment called for replacing the indefinite Irish border backstop with an 'alternative arrangement'
Theresa May whipped Conservatives on this vote in an effort to get it through. She needed this one to have something to bring back to Brussels.
The vote was 317-301.
Reports say that the EU has already drafted a response saying that nothing will be renegotiated.
May needs to get something by Feb 13 when the next meaningful vote will take place. I think there's some room for optimism here.
Here's the full text of the Brady amendment:
At end, add "and requires the Northern Ireland backstop to be replaced with alternative arrangements to avoid a hard border; supports leaving the European Union with a deal and would therefore support the withdrawal agreement subject to this change.".
Do you believe in May getting some palatable change?
Cable is back near the lows but still above the 200-dma. Corbyn is speaking in parliament and says he is prepared to meet with May now to discuss Brexit.
