TOKYO (MNI) – The balance of Japanese government bonds held by
non-residents hit a record high of Y76 trillion at the end of September,
or 8.2% of the Y919 trillion in outstanding JGBs, up from Y67 trillion,
or 7.4%, at the end of June, quarterly Bank of Japan data released
Wednesday showed.
The 8.2% increase is the largest gain since +8.5% at the end of
September 2008.
The data also showed that overseas investor holdings of JGBs rose
30.7% from a year earlier, with the pace of growth accelerating from a
28.3% rise at the end of June.
Wednesday’s data showed that non-Japanese investors were shifting
money away from Europe to safer assets in Japan and the U.S.
The data also showed that liabilities held by non-financial firms
at the end of September stood at Y992 trillion, down 3.2% from a year
earlier and marking the first time since end-March 1987 that the balance
has fallen below Y1,000 trillion.
