The WSJ reports that Trump has cancelled interviews with Fed Chair candidates after homing in on a pick.
The Timiraos report said interviews were scheduled for Wednesday with JD Vance were cancelled. No reason was given for the move and it wasn’t clear if the meetings would be rescheduled.
There is no clear indication it will be Hassett but it certainly indicates that Trump has made up his mind. Notably though, Hassett's interview was one of the ones cancelled (they all were).
“The truth is nobody knows who President Trump’s next pick for the Fed Chair will be until he makes the announcement himself. Everything until then is pure speculation,” the White House said in a statement.
Trump has a game-show flair for the dramatic. On Tuesday, he said that he had narrowed the list down to one and he later in the day mentioned Hassett as a potential Chairman.
“I guess a potential Fed chair is here too. I don’t know. Are we allowed to say that? Potential?”
A Hassett win would be positive for gold and bad for the US dollar and long-dated bonds, as he would risk stoking inflation by taking a relentlessly-dovish stance.
