U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will launch a series of interviews on Friday as part of the search for the next Federal Reserve chair, according to people familiar with the process. The interviews are expected to continue into next week and will be conducted either in person or via video conference.

  • Bessent and his advisers have identified 11 potential contenders, including Fed governors Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett, and former Fed governor Kevin Warsh. After the round of discussions, Bessent intends to present President Trump with a shortlist of candidates.
  • He had previously signalled that the process to find a successor to Jerome Powell would begin shortly after Labor Day.
