Last week’s announcement from ECB Governing Council member Jorg Asmussen to resign was a surprise and a blow of the moderates at the ECB. He announced an intention to resign but didn’t indicate a timeline. Now an ECB spokesman indicated he won’t attend any future meetings, including the next one on January 9.
Asmussen said he was resigning for family reasons but he was a thorn in the side of the German fiscal and monetary hawks so his exit is convenient for the Bundesbank.
